R.F. & H. L, DOHERTY ON LAWN TENNIS. New York: The Baker & Taylor Company, (1903). Original green decorated cloth. Attractive front cover of a tennis player in action. xvi + 233 pages + 4 pages of ads. Book measures 7 and 3/4 inches by 5 and 1/4 inches. Chapter titles are: The Strokes, Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles, Hints On Practice, Training and Match Play, Brief Notes For Beginners with a List Of Common Faults, Our Impressions Of Play And Players In America, Ladies Play (By Miss Toupie Lowther), Some Hints On The Construction And Care Of Grass Courts, How Lawn Tennis Compares With Some Other Games, Lists Of Champions, Rules and Regulations. Profusely illustrated. The book is in better than very good condition, tight and clean. There are two internal cracks in the text block, - between pp. 40 and 41 and between pp. 162 and 163. Covers are very attractive with a hint of silverfish activity on the front cover and spine. All in all a very nice copy offered here at a very reasonable starting price. I will be listing some more early tennis titles over the next day or two. I will also be listing many issues of the lavish and beautifully illustrated magazine The Sportsman which was published with no expense spared in the late 1920's in of all places Concord, NH. Sumptious, gorgeous, with great covers and ads. Check my listings this read more
