EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE ARCHITECTURAL VOLUME “THE GENTLEMAN'S HOUSE; OR, HOW TO PLAN ENGLISH RESIDENCES” FROM THE PARSONAGE TO THE PALACE; WITH TABLES OF ACCOMODATION AND COST, AND A SERIES OF SELECTED PLANS. BY ROBERT KERR, ARCHITECT, PUBLISHED IN LONDON: JOHN MURRAY, 1865 . Fantastic and profusely illustrated work is this notably rare “Second Edition, revised, With A Supplement On Works of Alteration, And Additional Plates.” Kerr was a prolific writer as well as lecturer on architectural subjects, favoring a mixture of architectural styles, which he called “Latitudinarian.” This present book of Kerr's is described in the Oxford Dictionary Of National Biography as “the most lucid and encyclopedic account of mid-Victorian domestic planning.” No detail is too small for Kerr's attention. Even the poultry are taken care of; they must have plenty of space because “none will flourish without a good run of greensward.” With its comments on the upstairs and downstairs of life in those days this is also not only an architectural treasure but a superb book for the social historian and a reassuring volume at the time for those who wished to build a fine house in a variety of styles.
Contents; Book is divided into five parts [the sixth part being an explanation of the 45 plates], with numerous plates, fold-out plans, in text drawings and illustrations to present an invaluable reference and an historically important worthy acquisition indeed. The original owner has made pencil notations and a handwritten "index" of pages that were apparently especially important to him [please see image]; the handwritten "index" is in the last part of this nineteenth century architectural treatise. The "table of contents" covers 24 pages with numerous headings and sub-headings in great detail.
