DOMINICAN COPAL WITH INSECT INCLUSIONS Featured in this listing is a genuine piece of copal from the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is famous for its Amber, produced from the Hymenaea Protera tree. It does however also produce copal (a form of young, not yet fully polymerized form of amber). The tree resin from which this copal is derived emanates from the still extant Hymenea Courbaril a relative, and probably a descendent of the extinct Protera species. The copal is considered sub recent, and much of what is mined is thought to be 200 years old or even less. It does however, frequently contain very nicely preserved inclusions, in which even the colours are vividly preserved in the clear, almost colourless resin. This particular specimen contains a nematode worm and two diptera (flies). Worm inclusions in amber/copal are very unusua l, this is the first one I have encountered. The inclusions in the specimens I sell benefit immensely by being viewed under magnification. Fortunately, I also sell handy magnifiers with a UV light as well as a normal LED built into them. These are very handy to have if you do not already own one, please see my other listings. I also sell other amber and copal types, including Burmese Amber from the dinosaur era, please see my other listings. Most amber fluoresces strongly under UV light read more
