Rare find. Sterling silver chocolate set. By Dominick & Haff.
Twelve sterling silver and gilt chocolate spoons. One matching chocolate muddler. Pattern Renaissance #1894 Enchanting. Victorian, art nouveau decoration. Rich, beautiful and ornate. Most exciting--pattern features whimsical portrait in high relief on handles, and also, on backs of bowls. Bright-eyed fellow with long, curly locks and beard that swirl 'round his animated features. Expression on his countenance one of such good cheer, closely resembles Saint Nicholas. Portrait appears on gilded backs of spoons also. Gilt on both sides of bowls sometimes referred to as gold wash . History of Chocolate Spoons Back in the 1800s, h ot chocolate drinks required constant stirring to prevent chocolate from settling to bottom. Thus, chocolate spoons. The muddler is a long-handled spoon, used to stir chocolate in pot, before serving into specially designed cups. Maker's Mark Horizontal mark of Dominick & Haff features linked rectangle, circle and diamond shapes (which sometimes contain letters and/or numbers). To left of mark reads: STERLING . To right of mark (closer to handle top) reads: PAT-D.94. Measurements Spoons: 4 1/4 " long x 1 1/4 " diameter bowls Muddler: 7 5/8 " x 1 3/4 " diameter bowls Set weight: 9.5 ounces (270 grams), or 8.68 troy ounces. Condition Excellent. Gently used and very well maintained. Presented as found, without polishing. (Leaving that to discretion of buyer.) NOTE: This a relisting. Original buyer returned set, stating monogram removal as reason. 's an update on that notion from Antique Discussion Board experts. "From the photos (not 100% conclusive, but close) I would say that you have a case of buyer's remorse. T is no evidence shown of any removal from your very good pics. If the blank area shows no evidence of removal (lack of rounding in the contour of the silver, any flattening, unremoved portions of the monogram, etc.), then chances are, t was never a mono to begin with." "I do not see why that buyer would question those pieces..The slight parallel lines come from polishing..and ALL SURFACES are even plane..If you still want to investigate..maybe ask the buyer what lead him to believe the set was tampered with?.. It would be a big job to remove initials from the entire set..and make it look this good!" "It is impossible to remove a monogram leaving the curved contour on the front of the handle unblemished, as it certainly appears to be from the excellent photos. As for the price, it's hard to pin down the retail value, as t are none readily available. "IMO, the spoons would be $50 - $70 EACH and the muddler $200- $300." "This is an expensive, desirable set, period." Provenance Heirloom from a New York estate that's in the process of being downsized. See and watch for more fine items from this and other collections.
