LEGENDARY BORUCA INDIAN MASK 100% NATURAL The mask you are looking at is an extra large size standing almost 20" high and 9" wide. It is 100% authentic and is hand made and hand painted. The Boruca use all natural paint that they make from various items from the forest, rivers and sea. It was made by Santos Leiva of the Boruca Indian tribe in the village of Boruca Costa Rica. The process of making one of these masks is very tedious and painstaking work. It normally takes 3 to 5 days to make one, depending on how much PURA VIDA is involved. PURA VIDA has a loose interpretation of Pure Life or THINGS HAPPEN MAN!!! Each mask is unique, for each mask is hand carved from Balsa wood and then each is painted differently. Each one has the name of the artist and w it was made on the back. The masks they make always include some of the wildlife that is native to Costa Rica . Over hundreds of years, the Boruca Indians have followed this tradition and once a year they hold their shamanic ceremony that is called Play of the Little Devils, Juego de los Diablitos, or Danza de los Diablitos, and everyone wears a mask for three days. These masks are some of the most beautiful and brilliantly colored masks in the world. Each mask is hand carved from a solid piece of balsa or cedar wood then intricately painted using 100% natural paint that is still made using organic dyes or pigment from various plants of the rain forest. This one is a double mask with a Boruca Chief mask on the bottom & a Devil mask on top. This one has a War painted Boruca Chief; Devil with horns & Fang's, Macaw Three toed Sloth, Snake and an Owl. Plus many other decorations and also has a painted scenic rainforest as a background.
