Smith, began his career as an engineer for Douglas Aircraft Company, in the 1930's, and played a key role in the design of many successful tactical airplanes for 50+ years. Along the way he developed world class skills as an aviation artist. He is counted as among the greatest aviation artists in the history of aviation. He passed away in 2001. Print of an tempera watercolor painting: Douglas WWII Navy SBD Dive Bomber Dick Best was the commander of Bombing Squardron Six with 16 SBD dive bombers from the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV6). On the early morning of June 4 1942, Lt Best landed the first and fatal hit on the Japanese carrier Akagi. Later that afternoon he got an additional hit on the carrier Hiryu, contributing to the sinking of two of the four Japanese carriers. He was awarded the Navy Cross for gallantly leading his squadron in the attack against the Japanese at the Battle of Midway. Bob Elder flying from the USS Yorktown (CV5) bombed the Japanese carrier Soryu contributing to it's d estruction.
