This auction is for a rare Doulton self pouring teapot. Approx 7 inches high and approx 9 inches wide. This is a heavy teapot, it has a hairline from the top 'collar' to the top of the gold band just above the middle - about an inch away from the handle - it is stable and does not appear to go through to the inside - possibly to do with the metal ring on the inside of the collar. There is a small flake of paint missing on the handle - see pic. The metal lid is fine but the knob from the top has broken off and because of this the seal needed to make the teapot self pour is not air tight so you need to cover the small hole to make the pot work - it does work - it is quite impressive if a little pointless - lets face it pouring tea is not hard work. Despite the minor problems it is a lovely item, a pleasing shape and a piece of history. On the base there are three stamps - one pertaining to the patent of the self pouring invention, one stating that the teapot was made by Doulton Burslem for J.J. Royles Manchester and a raised lozenge shape stamp that is on items registered at the patent office between 1842 -1883.For more info on the stamps .au/dating_lambeth.asp.
