Offered for sale is an original 1736 edition of Francis Drake's "Eboracum, or the History and Antiquities of the City of York from it's original to the present times, together with the History of The Cathedral Church from the introduction of Christianity......" This is one of the most influential and often quoted books on the subject of English History, and one of the most rare. My research has indicated that of the approximately 550 copies printed, less than 100 are known to still exist world-wide, and the vast majority of these are stashed away in the rare book rooms of large libraries. While t have been several re-publications of this work in edited form, only the 1736 edition is complete with all 60 plates, full text, dedication, and original subscriber list. It is a large book, approximately 12.25" x 15.5" with some 627 text pages, plus 28 pages of front material including the preface and dedication, an appendix of another 110 pages, and a complete index comprising 33 more. T are a total of 789 pages. The 60 illustrations are all original copperplate engravings, of magnificent workmanship and quality. The vast majority are approximately 8.25" x 11.75" in image area, while several are twice that size and a few are smaller. I have included several good photographs of the actual illustrations to show their quality. Condition of this copy: Considering it's age, this book is in fair/good condition. All of the original signatures are intact, and none of the pages are missing. This particular copy is rarer than most because the page edges have never been trimmed, and still have their deckled edge. Most other copies have been trimmed. The paper in the original text block is all hand-made. Binding: This book appears to have been rebound in the middle/late 1800's, with marbleized covers and endpapers. I am not sure of the rebind date, this is a "best guess". It could be as late as the 1920's. The binding of the text block is intact, and no pages are falling out. The front cover is detached. The rear cover and spine are still attached. Value of this book: I am not a book appraiser, so I can't say what this book is actually worth in an open market. I DO know however that I have located three other copies in the world that are for sale, and these are being listed in the $1800 to $3000 price range. Since the pages on this particular copy still retain their original deckled edges, and the presence of the margin glosses, I would venture a guess that this book is worth at least as much as the ones currently for sale. Remember, this book contains 60 ORIGINAL COPPERPLATE ENGRAVINGS of extraordinary quality . The market value of these plates alone far exceed the $600 starting bid for this item.BUT, since I'm not sure about it's real value I've decided to let the free market forces decide a suitable selling price. Tfore this book is for sale with no reserve. Margin Notes and Provenance: This book has numerous hand-written glosses in the margins which appear to be in very old Iron Gall ink. The notes appear to indicate that they were written before ~1800 in preparation of an edition of "Britainia". They reference numerous events and period commentary on the subjects in the text. These notes add a wealth of information not contained anyw else. A note pasted onto the title page documents the original ownership of the book back to a person named "Thursby", who is listed in the subscriber list. I have included as many photographs as possible to show the condition of this book, and described it to the best of my ability. Terms: Due to it's age, this item is being sold as-is, with no guarantees other than that it is as described above. Please inspect the photographs and descriptions very carefully, and ask any questions prior to biddng. This book is offered for sale worldwide. For buyers in the United States or Canada, I accept Paypal, checks or money orders. All other buyers MUST Other payment methods will be consi...
