Offered with no reserve are the complete works of Virgil in the translation of John Dryden, printed at London in 1721 in three octavo volumes, adorned with a full-page engraved frontispiece portrait of Dryden and bound in the original early 18th century English paneled calf. The full title of the set reads as follows: “The Works of Virgil: Containing his Pastorals, Georgics and Aeneis. / Translated into English Verse; By Mr. Dryden. / In Three Volumes. / … The Fifth Edition. / London: Printed for Jacob Tonson in the Strand. / MDCCXXI [1721].” The front free endpaper of each volume bears the ornate contemporary ownership inscription of Francis Meysey, dated 30 July 1723. Dryden’s translation of Virgil is considered a masterpiece of English literature; certainly, it remains the finest translation of Virgil into English. This edition is very attractively produced and bound, and dates to only 24 years after the first edition. Dryden himself was considered in his time to be second only to Milton amongst poets between Shakespeare and Pope. Virgil, of course, is nearly universally regarded as the finest poet of the Latin language; in antiquity, he was considered the only peer of Homer. Virgil’s Aeneis, in particular, is one of works in all of literature. The present set is a near-fine example, with clean pages and clear print internally, and with only the slightest toning. The margins are ample throughout and the frontispiece portrait is an excellent impression. The volumes comprise 1043 numbered pages in total (numbered sequentially) and are complete in all respects. Each volume measures about 16.7 cm by 10.5 cm by 2.7 cm; each page measures about 162 mm by 98 mm. The early 18th century paneled calf bindings show only slight wear at the corners, edges and hinges, and very light scuffing of the boards. The hinges remain intact and quite strong. The third volume lacks its spine label; that of the second volume shows a tear and slight loss. These are undoubtedly the set’s original bindings and they are entirely unrestored. In all, this is very desirable copy of the 1721 edition of John Dryden’s translation of the complete works of Virgil, one of the finest works of English poetry and the finest translation of Virgil into English, printed in three volumes in octavo at London, bound in the original early 18th century paneled calf, with a fine frontispiece portrait of Dryden, in excellent condition internally and externally, complete in all respects, and offered with no reserve. Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volume.
