This is a large - slightly "pushed", but still very beautiful Confederate South Carolina jacket button found on a Civil War site near Charleston , SC. It bears the backmark of Scovill's & Co. Waterbury, which should place the manufacture of this button around the 1840-1850 range. Many buttons dug on these old battlesites and campsites will come out of the ground bent, or otherwise damaged - often because of the battle or skirmish the soldier was involved in. As you can see the shank is missing from this button. Also, it has not been cleaned in any way, so flecks of soil are still embedded in some of the grooves of the lined face. The detail on this button is outstanding, despite the push to the front. Another beautiful piece of Charleston's early Civil War history! S&H is $3.99. PayPal preferred. Any questions please ask!
