Fort Kearny , located in central Nebraska , was the first government fort to offer protection from hostile Indians and assistance to the emigrants. Its construction was completed in 1848 and remained active till 1871.. By the 1860's it also became a home station for the Pony Express as well as a stage coach station. It was named in honor of General Stephen Watts Kearny who had been responsible for a previous and short-lived fort of the same name near Nebraska City .
