Estate - Dunhill Root Briar Smoking Pipe with 1/20 14K G.F. Gold Bandind- In VERY Good Condition! This is a NO Reserve auction for this pre-owned Dunhill Group 5 ROOT BRIAR Smoking Pipe . The pipe is a beauty and certainly was given loving care by its' prior owner . T is a hint of ash noted in the bowl No issues are noted! I must say, it is in terrific condition for a pre-owned pipe. ABOUT ROOT BRIAR FINISH (from Richard Hacker "Rare Smoke" pg.49) " Introduced in 1931 and one of the most sought-after finishes ; because of the natural, unstained briar dramaticall depicts every nuance of the grain. This, of course, requires that only the very best briar (100% clean bowls and usually with above average graining) must be used fo rthe Root Briar finish. Consequently, it is the most expensive of all Alfred Dunhill pipes." As you would expect it is extremely lightweight (only the very best briar makes the grade!) and well balanced. The smooth briar of the bowl feels great in the hand. The smoke hole is 'dead on' and a pipe cleaner just glides smoothly thru the stem into the bowl! Overall length of about 6 1/4" long; bowl height 2" with inner bowl diameter of 3/4". The outer width of the bowl is 1 3/4" in width. It has the original Vulcanite mouthpiece & White Spot. The F/T stem and tenon fit tight in the shank. The stem is in excellent condition with a 'hint' of a toothmark or two- pretty much buffed smooth. The gold band does NOT cover a problem with the shank (see close-up picture of the end of the shank w the band is. The nomenclature is partially under the band- yet I see no reason for the band to be added. The pipe is a very well-balanced bent shape-- so I would greatly doubt that a repair was needed so they cut off part of the shank-- and that would still not explain the band. I can only 'assume' the band was put on at the factory or, and this is unlikely, the prior owner had it added as an accent piece. Nomenclature on the shank (crisp and clear- partial of the nomenclature, as noted above, is covered by the band): 5202; Made in England24 and Dunhill Root Briar. It is in Excellent conditon as I do hope my pictures will show .
