Photo is of Dutch Leonard circa 1934-35, pictured here in his Brooklyn Dodgers uniform. Emil John Leonard was born in 1909 in Auburn, IL and died in 1983 in Springfield, IL. He played major league baseball from 1933 to 1953 as pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Washington Senators, Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs, and was selected 5 times as an All-Star. Leonard was able to remain an active and competitive pitcher through his mid-forties because of his knuckleball, which was one of the best of his generation. After his playing career ended, pitcher Dutch Leonard was a Chicago Cubs coach from 1954 to 1956. After leaving the coaching staff of the Chicago Cubs, Leonard worked with the Illinois Youth Commission until retirement in 1974. This is an original vintage 4''x6'' photograph produced by George Burke between 1934 and 1949, not a modern-day reprint. The longest-running operation of all the great early photographers, George Burke and George Brace covered baseball in one form or another for the better part of the 20th Century. A case of mistaken identity made by the Chicago Cubs resulted in Burke becoming the official photographer for the Chicago Cubs. (George Burke was mistaken as Cubs former photographer Francis Burke). To undertake his new "big league" endeavor Burke enlisted the help of the younger and more baseball-knowledgeable George Brace. Ever-present at Wrigley Field and Comiskey Park, Chicagoan George Burke set out in 1929 to compile the most complete portfolio of player portraits - a feat made possible by the presence of both an American League team and a National League squad within the same city. As the official photographer for the Chicago Cubs, Burke quickly became renowned for his candid pre-game photos and thought-provoking portrait depictions. Burke's significantly extensive assortment of photographs truly captured the essence of America's game as it existed during the early 20th Century. Each original masterpiece reveals a fresh portrayal of the bygone ballplayers, many of whom were obscure, short-term roster occupants whose likenesses were rarely preserved in photos. These well-preserved keepsakes exhibit occasional minor corner wear or instances of modest surface faults, which are undoubtedly the natural result of years of storage. Yet, these being the only nominal blemishes, these mostly different, black-and-white and sepia-toned depictions generally average EX to EX/MT condition with some examples displaying higher quality and only a few lesser. Most have a matte or satin finish, and in most cases the name of the player is handwritten or typed on the photo's reverse. These scans have not been touched up in any way, and the photograph shown is the actual one that you will receive.
