If you'd like to see some of the others, please * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ANTIQUE HAND-COLORED MAP ( genuine ) * * * * * Scarce Map of DUTCHESS COUNTY New York * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * With Detailed Map of RED HOOK Showing Names of Land Owners * * * * * - 1876 - ***** This scarce antique map, titled " Map of Dutchess County, New York ," was made in the year 1876, just a decade after the Civil War ended. This map has original hand coloring and, drawn on a scale of 1-1/2 miles to the inch, there is great detail in its delineation of cities, towns and villages; railroads and post offices; mountains, lakes, ponds, creeks, etc. This is a very historic map, one you will rarely see offered. [At least not an original - there are reproductions of this map offered on eBay and elsewhere, but these are fairly easy to distinguish from this original, beautifully hand-colored antique map!] The historic importance of this map alone would be sufficient to establish it as a desirable relic of New York and Dutchess County history, but fortunately, it is also very, very displayable. This is very large map, measuring 27 inches by 17 inches and it beautifully hand-colored, with the areas of the different towns distinguished by different pastel coloring. This is a very detailed map, as well as being nicely colored - unfortunately, the low-resolution scans cause the colors to be a bit "off" and the details to be a bit blurred. But I can assure you this is one of the nicest and scarcest maps I’ve sold from my collection (and my "feedback" should let you know how accurate others felt my descriptions have been for maps and other items I’ve sold). The following political divisions are indicated by different pastel colors: AMENIA BEEKMAN CLINTON DOVER EAST FISHKILL FISHKILL HYDE PARK LAGRANGE MILAN NORTHEAST PAWLING PINE PLAINS PLEASANT VALLEY POUGHKEEPSIE RED HOOK RHINEBECK STANFORD UNIONVALE WASHINGTON In addition, on the reverse of this map there is another historic map, this one a 17 by 14 inch map of the TOWN OF RED HOOK. And this is extremely detailed, showing the land owners' names, as well as numerous other fine details (SEE SCANS) Finally, there is also on the reverse a 17 by 14 wood engraving of a yacht and shipbuilding yard in Poughkeepsie! This is a fantastic piece of Red Hook, Dutchess County, and New York history, and a beautiful display piece. This map was produced first as a black-and white lithographed engraving, and then afterwards was meticulously hand-colored in beautiful pastel shades. (This was the usual method of producing colored plates of any sort before the advent of printed color – the famous wildlife engravings of Audubon and others were produced in exactly the same way, starting as uncolored engravings which were later hand-colored.) With an appropriate mat and frame, this map will make an outstanding exhibit of 19th Century cartographic art! This map is guaranteed ORIGINAL – IT IS GENUINE, NOT A "REPRO" OF ANY SORT! It was made 137 years ago, and it is in great condition, despite its age. There is a little bit of roughness around the margins and a little surface dirt, but this map (and the Red Hook map and engraving) are free of any significant defects at all, which is a bit surprising given the size of this map.
