E&F Horster German Imperial Army Sawback Bayonet with Scabbard Purchased at an estate auction of a WW2 veteran. This was modified for use before he acquired it. The pommel was removed and the guard ground to make it seviceable as a knife. The blade is in very good condition and marked E&F HORSTER, SOLINGEN . The saw back is in excellent, complete condition and still very sharp. The leather ring handle is surprisingly in excellent condition as well. The markings on the bayonet and scabbard lead me to believe this was made in the very late 1800s or early 1900s. The scabbard is marked Sch.K. which stands for Schutztruppe Kamerun , a German troop unit stationed in Cameroon in the early 1900s. The bayonet guard, despite being ground, still has the letter P and the number 9 visible w PTK and a set of numbers would have been stamped. This would indicate it would have belonged to the Polizeitruppe Kamerun , again German troops stationed in Cameroon. I understand the bayonets issued to German troops in Cameroon originally had leather handles which were later replaced with other materials because the climate rotted the leather. The bayonet/knife blade measures 9 7/8" long and the guard to the brass keeper ring 4 3/16". The scabbard has some dings and dents from use but the bayonet/knife seats securely.
