This handsome pocket compass by the redoubtable Gurley Company is marked, “U.S. Engineer Dept…1918” on the lid of the nice wooden (Mahogany) box. The U.S. Engineer Dept of the U.S. Army is better known as the Army Corps of Engineers, and has been responsible for the design, planning and construction of military and other federal projects during war and peacetime, both in the U.S. and wherever American military interests occur. The date on this compass suggest that it was intended for use by military engineers in Europe during WWI. The compass is in excellent working and physical condition. The case measures 3 ¼” x 3 1/8” square and is 1 1/8” deep. The compass itself is 2 ½ inches in diameter with a needle 2” long. The compass circle is graduated in 360 easily read degrees. The needle keeper is employed when the case is closed. It is in Fine Condition. This was given to my wife by her mothers' grandfather. It has a crack on the glass. The E and W on the compass are reversed, but I am not sure why this was.
