Charles & Ray Eames (C: 1907-78 , R: 1912-88) Best known for their groundbreaking contributions to architecture, furniture design (the Eames Chair), industrial design and manufacturing, and the photographic arts. The legacy of this husband and wife team includes more than 100 films that reflect the breadth and depth of their interests and the integrity of their vision. Theirs was a design collaboration in the deepest sense, and all their work, whether graphics, film or furniture was a product of their collective design process and philosophy. C&R Eames are ranked among the finest American designers of the twentieth century. “ Eames Chair ” Much of the Eames' early work focused on forming plywood into useful objects, and while experimenting with techniques for bending plywood splints for the United States Navy, they developed the "Kazam! Machine," which was a press for molding plywood over two geometric planes into complex curves. They began experimenting with making chairs and other furniture from molded plywood in 1945, and in 1946 they developed a process that allowed wood and metal to be joined together. That same year, the Eames exhibited their furniture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In the early 1940s, the Eames had formed the Plyformed Wood Company, but they had to sell it to Evans Products Company w it became their Molded Plywood Division. This company initially made the chairs, tables and children's furniture that the Eames designed, and after the MOMA show, Herman Miller was given the right to market and distribute these pieces. Herman Miller took over the actual manufacturing of the furniture in 1949.
