Victorian Vaseline Opalescent English Art glass Stevens and Williams 1830-1930 "Jack In Pulpit" Vase with applique flower and leaves Lavender Opalescent Measures: 6 1/2 inches tall. This very magnificent vase has a candy ribbon Jack In Pulpit edging with a lavender color that swrils toward the bulbous body. The bulbous body has a yellow flower with a cranberry button center, t is a leaf on one side and the vase rests on a six petals for legs. The petal legs and leaf is vaseline color, the under belly has a broken pontil. The vase has been hand blown, very magnificent! Stevens & Williams : Stevens & Williams of Stourbridge, England, made many types of glass, including layered, etched, cameo, and art glass, between the 1830s and 1930s. Some pieces are signed S & W. Many pieces are decorated with flowers, leaves, and other designs based on nature. One of the items that many English glass houses were known for were 'whimseys' (known in England as ' friggers' ). These two terms have taken on the meaning of a glassmaker playing about with making small articles for himself on his own time. Throughout the history of glassmaking, the glassmaker has relieved the tedium of production by creating a charming variety of glass novelties.
