EARLIEST Of American Newspapers 1719 Boston News Letter is a complete, genuine historic newspaper with the following title, date and description: THE BOSTON NEWS-LETTER , Massachusetts, Aug. 24, 1719 * First successful newspaper ever published in America * By the famed Green family of colonial printers This is a great rarity of a newspaper for several reasons. This is the first successful newspaper ever published in America. The very first newspaper, "Publick Occurrences Both Forreign & Domestick", lasted but a single issue in 1690. It would be another 14 years before America would have a newspaper, the one offered , and it would publish until the evacuation of Boston in 1776. This is also a rare opportunity to find an American newspaper published in this decade, the 1710's. In fact, on the date of this issue this was the only newspaper publishing in America, as the only other two newspapers in existence in the colonies in 1719 did not begin publishing until late December. This is the very first American newspaper of this decade we have had the fortune to add to our inventory in over 20 years. This issue is typical of British newspapers of the period, with various reports from Europe on the first several pages and reports datelined "Boston" on the back page, in addition to other European reports. T is half a column of "Advertisements" on the back page as well. The imprint is at the bottom of the bkpg., reading: "Boston: Printed by B. Green in Newbury Street, for John Campbell in Corn Hill. 1719" (see photos). This issue is missing a 1 by 4 inch piece at the top of the masthead, plus has various tape mends at the folds with some loss from previous fold wear. T is various staining scattered throughout but none of which causes loss of readability. T is also a small hole (pencil eraser head size) on the front leaf. The back leaf is rather damage free although having a tape mend across the center & near the top, but loss of just a few letters from the fold wear. This issue was never bound nor trimmed so it retains the original deckle edges. The newspaper measures about 8 1/2 by 13 inches. Includes an acid free portfolio and a certificate of authenticity. An exceedingly rare opportunity for an early issue of America's first successful newspaper.
