EARLY 17th C. DELFT TIN-GLAZED EARTHENWARE PLATE
You'rebidding on an Early circa 17 th C. Delft Tin-Glazed Earthenware Plate. Painted in cobalt blue decoration. Stylized Country Scene of Shepherd and Maiden in Countryside, with sheep in a meadow. Measures: 8 inches wideCondition: 1 small chip on edge, 1 small repaired (in gold) chip, and minor edge wear typical of an antique plate of this age. Provenance: Tin-glazed earthenware, with blue-and-white or polychrome decoration, was first made in the early 17th century at Delft, Holland. The earliest delftware was “ Faienc e”, a heavy, brown earthenware with opaque white glaze and polychrome decoration, made in Delft in the late 16th century. Most Dutch Delft plates are often marked on the base with initials, or a sketchy drawing representing the factory’s name. From about 1640 Delft potters began using personal monograms and distinctive factory marks. Dutch Delftware Pictorial Plates were illustrated with religious motifs, native Dutch scenes with windmills, fishing boats, hunting scenes, landscapes and seascapes. The name Delft is also applied to the wares made in 17th-century London, Bristol, and Liverpool. It was given the name Delftware after the popular tin-glazed pottery from the Netherlands. English Delftware pottery is similar in many respects to that from Holland, but its peculiarly English quality has a more relaxed tone. The overriding mood is provincial and naive rather than urbane and sophisticated. Throughout the 18th century, English Deltware dishes and plates were extensively produced. These plates were virtually never marked and even the experts find it hard to identify the place of production, but this does not affect their value .Because this plate is "unsigned" and has a "naive" country scene, we believe it to be an early 17th century English Delftware plate. We can not however verify it's age, nor do we guaranty it's authenticity. We are selling this exceptional Delft Tin-Glazed Earthenware Plate in "AS-IS" Condition. U.S. Shipping is flat rate. International shipping will be determined upon sale and added to the final sale amount due.
