This nice primitive woodworking draw knife came from a collection of tools that were made for a carpenter and cooper in the 1820-1860's. Each craftsman had his tools made to the way he like to use them. Many variations of the same tool can be found today. Sometimes the maker did mark and date the tool, this one has no maker's mark or a date on it. This tool is hand forged with iron ferruled oak handles. The handles are a bit longer than I normally see on an older tool like this one, combined with the ferrules to keep them tightly in place makes this a unique draw knife. The handle are 8" long including the ferrule, they fit very tightly to the iron. There is no cracks in either the iron or the wood which is also rare on tools this old. There is a few lines in the iron that appear like cracks at first, but are line left by the metal shaping process, and the line do not extend to the outside of the metal. There is a few dings in the cutting edge as shown in the pictures, and I would say this tool hasn't been sharpened in well over 50 years. Other than the dings the cutting edge is pretty good, it will cut. Overall a nice unique early tool with less than normal wear!
