A old early 1800s maritime scrimshaw fid tool. Large ivory WHL bone tool was used by sailors aboard their ships to loosen knots in the ropes and to seperate strands for splicing. Carved by a whalesman for shipboard use. Has old scrimshawed lines and shows its age and history with a old chip. Beautiful ivory color and patina. Nice American folk art of the whaling days.
