PLEASE NOTE: To avoid confusion over the condition, weight, dimensions, description, shipping costs, or other related issues, please read all of the auction details below before bidding.
ITEM: Offered for your consideration on this auction is a very early and very beautiful wooden candle lantern, bowett or bowyt, or what some refer to as a barn lantern. This lantern has a very beautiful old patina, giving it a warm ebonized glow. This lantern is of typical old construction technique with each corner "post" extending through the four corners and then held in place with wire nails. This construction technique enables the replacement of broken panes of glass by removing the nails, removing the top, and then sliding the broken pane in place. The door is of mortise and tenon construction. As can be seen, this lantern has been used and has damage from this use, but the use has created a very fine, aged patina that is typical of the best of this type of old wooden lantern. Please see the close up pictures and do not miss this opportunity to own a very beautiful, primitive piece of American lighting history! CONDITION: As can be seen by the close up pictures, this lantern is clearly in a very old and used condition. When viewing the close up pictures, bidders can see that t are cracks in the wood, a corner of the base has broken off and is missing, and one of the corner posts appears to have broken off years ago, based upon the darkening of the wood. The door and hinges operate quite well. It is unlikely that the glass panes are original to this lantern. Furthermore, the lantern shows signs of use owing to the scorch marks on the smoke hole. T is no tin smoke bell on this lantern as is usually the case, and it does not appear that t ever was a tin smoke bell on this lantern. All of these condition issues are expected on a wooden lantern of this age, they add to the "patina" and they do not detract from what is a great example of early lighting. Please examine the close up pictures to better evaluate and judge the condition of this lantern before bidding. Please understand that I do my best to evaluate and inform bidders of condition, including close up pictures of the piece from all angles. If t is a misunderstanding about condition, please email me and I will negotiate a reasonable outcome. Please further understand that the lantern is a genuine antique being over 100 years old and tfore it is not in a new or unused condition. MAKER: As is typical with this type of lantern, it is unmarked so the maker of the lantern is unknown. I have looked at many of these lanterns and have never seen a marked example. DATE: Likely dates to the second quarter of the 19th century. MATERIAL: The lantern is of wood construction (type unknown), with a wire carrying or hanging handle. WEIGHT AND DIMENSIONS: This bowett weighs 46 ounces or very close to 3 pounds. This will bring final shipping weight to between 3 and 4 pounds. If you wish to calculate your own shipping costs, use my postal zip code, 55021 or you can email me for a shipping calculation. Overseas buyers should always email for a shipping calculation before bidding. This lantern is close to 15 inches tall when the handle is up and 12 inches tall with the handle down. The front and back are 6 1/2 inches wide and the sides are a bit over 5 1/2 inches wide. The top and bottom are 8 by 6 3/4 inches. QUESTIONS: If you have questions regarding condition or description, or other terms of this sale, please email me at least a day before the end of the auction so that I have time to respond to your query before the end of the auction. I will attempt questions to the best of my ability and the limits of my personal knowledge of a piece. I will also post or email additional pictures upon request. Again, questions later than a day before the end of the auction may not be received in time to offer an answer. INVOICING AND PAYMENT: Please wait until I have sent you an Ebay invoice, usually within 24 hours of...
