We are clearing out 40 years of accumulated clutter. This is a beautiful early snuffbox dating to the 1840's. It is black with a magnificent but vert delicate mother of pearl inlaid floral pattern in the palest pastel colors (pink green, lavendar, ivory). Included in the box are the original contents: what appears to be 2 pieces of atrophied/fossilezed snuff! and even better, the remains of an aged and yellowed note, that fell to pieces along the fold lines. You can barely read the light pencil script writing but upon close inspection one piece has the word MOTHER'S and another piece has two words, KEEPSAKES and BOX. The box measures 3 1/4 inches wide by 2 inches deep, by just short of 1 inch tall. A ladies snuff box or keepsake box? Was snuff one of Mother's treasures? A fascinating find. Beautiful condition. Worth well more than the opening bid!
