Major General John Logan (Union General Republican , later Senator & Vice Presidential Candidate) Stereo view photo, Condition of photo as seen in scans. John A. Logan (1826-1886). Democratic congressman from Illinois before the Civil War; able commander under Grant; Republican congressman and senator after the war; active in the GAR, where he led the campaign for the creation of Memorial Day; unsuccessful vice-presidential candidate with James G. Blaine against Grover Cleveland in 1884. Photo by H. T. Anthony & Co , published by E.
