This is an early 19th century oak splint hanging basket. It was most likely used to hold weaving bobbins. The basket was hung on a loom post, and the bobbins were placed inside for use and storage. It has an open weave checkered board bottom. The weaving is a simple "Over and Under" pattern utilizing the ribs of the basket. One does not see that many hanging baskets of this design or quality. It has some minor breaks and missing pieces, however, a serious collector could live with it as is or one could have it professionally restored. The fact is that it is an exceptional example of an early basket and Americana. The basket is substantial in size, 12" high, and 11-1/2" wide
