We found 2 of these years ago at a house built in the early 1900's, along with many other old glassware pieces and other old items, as we were cleaning out the house & old car shed, w we found these, to prepare the property for sale. I have the other battery jar listed in a separate auction, and a photo of them together below. This jar is on the right in that photo. I hope you can see the slight difference in the color of these: #1 is slightly darker and 1/8 of an inch wider across the top rim than this one (#2). Both battery jars have 5/16" vertical beaded lines encircling below the rim, and stippled bottoms with a smooth place in the middles w t is what appears to be a faint mold mark of a rectangle inside a circle, which I've tried to show in a photo. Both also have slight raised dots in a verticle row on the corners, more felt than seen, and more so on jar #1. These large old glass jars were used in the early days of electricity to make batteries for automobiles, tractors, etc., as well as to store electricity for home & farm use in the early 1900's. This BATTERY JAR #2 MEASURES: 9-3/4" Wide across the top Rim 6-1/4" Deep across the top Rim 6-15/16" high to the top Rim The Glass of both jars is "wavy" looking with a few small bubbles and cooling lines (straw marks) which is all from the way they were made, as much old glass of this type is. These are quite heavy glass! Both jars are in very Nice Condition! NO Cracks or Chips! Only some very Minor slightly rough spots on the rims. The glass is clear. I only rinsed the dirt & dust off, and it could use a better cleaning. I believe this battery jar dates early 1900's, and no later than early 1930. I have closely inspected it, & provided several photos below. This would be wonderful to add to your collection! A Fantastic piece to display!
