Early 1900s Large Carp Fish. Glass German Glass Christmas Tree Ornament. Pre-World War I German German Glass Christmas Tree Ornament. This is when the "White Tree" was in vogue, where ornaments had a white, soft pastel appearance. This was in contrasty with the "Victorian Tree" where more color and excess were the norm. This was more of a "Back to Nature" movement with white, clear, and snow like ornaments. The carp is traditional Christmas fare for the Polish, who consume it on Christmas Eve. It is also eaten by the Czechoslovakians and the Slovakians on Christmas as well. The fish has been the symbol of Christ for ever, and it is a revered ornament on the Christmas tree. I must admit that we did catch carp on Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin, when I was a kid. But we never ate them. I would take them home, and put them under Dahlias and other plants. They made the best of fertilizer, and the Dahlias, the Dinner Plate ones grew and grew... the Carp were fantastic natural fertilizer. So, I loved to catch carp, but for a different reason. Silvered inside. Great pearl and gold colored lacquered. Molding of the fins, eyes, etc. is just excellent. Large red eyes. Lacquered red fins for breathing. A large carp.
