I will be listing many Castellos this week, so please check my other items. There you will find excellent examples of the very earliest Castello pipes. Along with pre-1930 Dunhills and pre-WWI Barlings, my collecting has been aimed at these very early Italian pieces. Ivory inlays, Vulcanite mouthpieces, Shape #s, rare nomenclature, all are a part of these early pipes. This trademark #31/A Castello is another example of an early Castello. One of only a few trademarks in my collection, it has a clean and crisp, original stem, round and centered bowl, crisp rim, very thick walls, clear and crisp nomenclature, and with overall perfect proportions. About a Dunhill group 5 capacity. Reg #'s clearly present. Notice the elegant Ivory inlay. Very classy pipe indeed with its rich, bruyere-like staining. An important note regarding early Castellos: the face of the mouthpiece is cut much differently than the (later) Lucite stems. It has a "flatter" face with a differently cut draft hole. This is a tell-tale sign of early makes (along, of course, with the nomenclature).Length: 5 7/8"Height: 2"Again, these early Castellos are very rare and hold a significant place in pipe history. Any questions, please email. !
