This interesting small storage or blanket box came out of a Maine estate. It dates back to the mid 1800's and is elaborately paint decorated using a technique called "smoke decorating" which was accomplished by using smoke from a burning candle. This was done over a base coat and sealed to secure the surface. This type of paint decoration was primarily used by Maine artisans of the 19th C. (some paint and surface imperfections from use and age). Original hinges and open till. Measures 36" wide by 17" deep by 16" tall.
