American Hollow-Cut Silhouette of a Young Man The frame is period and is made of plaster over wood with what I call silver-gilt. This type of gilding is much scarcer than the gold-leaf type. It measures about 4.75 x 5.75 inches with some wear around the periphery and loss of gilding here and there. The opening is about 3.25 x 4.25 inches. The hollow-cut is well done with the hanging forelock, typical of circa 1810 style. The artist is unknown American. The sitter is probably ten years or so, a cute looking boy. Silhouettes of children, especially attractive ones, are difficult to find. The silhouette paper is sewed onto the black silk. I see this type of sewing from time to time. It is often found in old collections from Philadelphia area, done in the late 1800s. This is a good honest package for your consideration.
