This is a High Relief US MintPresidential/Indian Peace medal of James Monroe. It is a huge 3 in (76mm) in diameter andweighs 233 grams (8.1 oz). The obverse was designed by Moritz Furst and the reverse was designed by John Reich. This is a VERY EARLY 20 th Century strike, likely produced in the 1900’s; it has a greenish cast, not the golden bronze of the strikes of the 1910’s – 1930’s. This version of the medal has glossy features and MUCH finer detail than the post-WWII versions, which were finished with a “sandblasting” matte finish that created a “pitted” surface and literally blasted away all the finer details. Medal production was almost nonexistent during the depression and war years. I have provided a comparison photo of this medal and a late 20 th century version . This had been in continuous production in the 20 th century and until 2008 this is still available from the mint for $38.00. However, recent visits to the USMINT.gov web site showed that ALL presidential medals prior to Clinton (With the exceptions of Washington and Lincoln) are NO longer available.
