A VERY EARLY AND QUITE BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE ALEPPO KELIM FRAGMENT, Ottoman Empire, Northwest Syria, 1st half of the 19th century. The exact size is: 2'-8" x 3'-10". NOTE: This lovely collector's fragment is the mate to the one I sold on eBay auction a couple weeks ago. Refer to eBay item number 120162209740. Aleppo, an ancient city of northwest Syria, is now called Haleb. It was formerly part of southeast Anatolia and an administrative center during the rule of the Ottoman empire. In the 1st half of the 19th century many kelims were woven in this area and they were used as curtains and wall hangings. They were woven in two pieces and sewn together down the middle. Like the present fragment, many had insect-derived cochineal dyes. The color palette on this beautiful fragment is superb and I took the pictures outside in the intense, high altitude, clear, Colorado sunshine to truly capture their radiant magnificence. This weaving has been professionally cleaned to museum standards and is now suitable to be mounted on a stretcher for display or it can be used as a wall hanging "as is". The handle is very soft and supple, like a shawl.
