EARLY A NTIQUE BRASS SNUFF BOX A very nice and substantial brass snuff or tobacco box, probably originally belonging to a miner. The front is curved and the back is nicely rounded, but it is unusual in having a hinge that is flush with the top of the box. The lid is inscribed with "John Miller", HAGGS within an engraved oval; and a date that is difficult to read due to wear but which looks to be 1640!!! It does appear to have great age as shown by the wear to the inscription. Above the hinge is what could be a trademark - a bell, but again it is difficult to see. Haggs is a small mining village in Falkirk, Scotland. I n excellent condition and undamaged, the lid opens smoothly and closes virtually flush with the main body. It does have the odd minor ding but due to the thickness of the brass they are minor and are visible in the photographs, and it measures approx 3” (7.5 cm) long x 1 5/8” (4.2 cm) wide x 7/8” (2.2 cm) deep. Standard 1st class postage includes compensation up to £46 - if the final bid is above that I recommend using Special Delivery which guarantees next working day delivery and insurance to £500. The International postage quoted is the maximum and does NOT include insurance - international bidders should contact me for an accurate price.
