An early bulbous Chinese vase on mahogany or teak pedestal in an apple red, crackled glaze. The vase, 15" tall by approximately 8" at the widest point, has been drilled for lamp use...as well as the pedestal. I will leave it to the experts to decide what period it is and stick to as good a description as I can manage. There is a fine crack running from the base of the neck beginning with the lower ring and running down several inches and then going to the right for about three inches...there is a tiny chip out of the glaze and the crack continues upwards for about an inch...I believe it is a surface crack as I can't hear any change in the sound when I test it with my nails...the crack is not visible except on close inspection. There is an air bubble, I believe, of perhaps 1/8th of an inch on the straight base just under the body. There are two rim chips on the pottery base, neither run into the glaze...the bottom has several of the air bubbles that I described on the glaze of the base. There are several red glaze drips inside the lip of the vase and a color similar to celadon can be faintly seen in the same area. It has been suggested that it might be a 19th Century version of the Lang yao glaze....my feeling is that it is considerably earlier than that and that the form could be important. A similar form in the red glaze is one of the highly prized attractions in the Formosan Palace...taken by Chiang Kai-Shek when the Nationalists left the mainland of China. The pedestal has lost its round from shrinkage and that generally does not happen within a century, and the pedestal has been with this piece for a long, long time. One note...I am not at liberty to reveal provenance at this time other than to say it came from an historical American family, well versed in Oriental antiquities....I will reveal the provenance, without documentation, to the buyer. Happy Hunting!!
