Antique Santa Clara Pueblo blackware handpolished bowl with four bear paw impressions. This goodsized example is approx. 8 1/2" in diameter and 4 5/8" tall. The design was used as early as 1890 by Lela and Van Gutierrez and also by the early potters Sarafina and Geronimo Tafoya. Examples of their work with the bear paw design can be found in the book, "Seven Families in Pueblo Pottery". Margaret Tafoya also used the design in her work. This early example is unsigned. T is age wear and scratches on the exterior and on the bottom quite normal for an early bowl. T are no cracks or chips. It is in good condition for age.
