We respect the quality of these former buttons and cufflinks by converting in the highest and best method possible...using a $30,000 laser welder to fuse the 14k wires in place. This method protects the enamels and gems from the ruinous heat of a torch. Beware of imitators who have similar looking earrings, but who have wavy looking wires, damaged enamel and sloppy solder flowed all over the backs of the earrings. As professional jewelers of 38 years, we are dismayed that this kind of work being offered....the earrings deserve better and so do you. This auction is for a striking pair of early Art Deco pearl and champleve enamel earrings. The oval earring face is decorated by champleve enamel...a rich black, fired glass enamel on the frame edge surrounding a octagon edged "bulls eye" within a reeded "sunburst" surround. This simple guilloche engraved pattern has been accented by firing it with a pale lilac transparent enamel. The enamels are our favorites...light reflecting through the translucent glass adds a brilliant tonal quality to the enamel, just as sunlight enhances a stained-glass window. Adding an elegant touch, a glowing full pearl is centered at the heart of the earring. These two peg set, genuine gems measure approximately 2.3mm in diameter and have a creamy white color with a rose tint. They have a excellent luster and no eye visible blemishes. The earring face is hallmarked sterling, the ear wires are solid 14k white gold. We love finding old, neglected things and giving them a new life lease! We're professional jewelers who see beauty and possibility in the last century's cast offs...vintage cufflinks, lingerie pins and awesome old clothes buttons. Why tear up the earth using dwindling resources when, if you just look with fresh eyes, you'll see the possibility we do. These earrings started life circa 1920 as a pair of cufflinks. We removed the connecting chain and attached the solid gold, vintage style ear wires using our laser welder. You'll love the shepherd hook and catch...so easy to use and the give the earring an eye catching swing. We always use solid 14k for our ear wires so you have good gold for your sensitive ears. In keeping with our feelings of recycling, we source our 14k wire from a company which does no new mining, only buying scrap gold to recycle and refine to new. We wouldn't have it any other way...why would you? The laser welder is what makes our earrings possible. The machine literally generates a laser beam which welds the silver and gold together...no sloppy solders and no heat or flame which would ruin the delicate pearls and enamel. The earring face measures 17.2mm long by 12mm wide and hang 1 and 3/8th inches in the ear. They weigh a very comfortable 3.2 total grams. The earrings and the enamel are in good shape but please note that one of the earrings shows some of the wear and tear of the last 90 years. That earring has two flat line cracks which run horizontally and to the left beneath the one pearl. These cracks are stable and only slightly eye visible when you are looking at them in hand...invisible to the viewer when in the ear.
