This is an early Babcock milk fat testing kit that was used by the Connecticut Agricultural Station. The Babcock test dates to the 1880s, and I believe this kit to date to the late 1800s to the early 1900s. It is really a unique item, and it is complete. T are 24 bottles included, 19 which match each other in terms of acid etching, with a hexagon mark, "U.S.A." and a K, below which appear the initials NAFIS. Five bottles, which I believe may be earlier, have what appears to be an American eagle clutching arrows mark. I have included a picture. Most bottles have also had the CT AG ST etching added to their stems, and in a few cases the bulbs, which identified them as property of the Connecticut Agricultural Station. I have included a picture of this also. The carrying case is really amazing and fully functional. Each side holds 12 bottles and is hinged so that the bottles can be removed or secured for transport. T is a partial paper label on the carrying case, which is pictured below. The Babcock test was used to determine the level of fat present in milk, using sulfuric acid. It is an important part of dairy history, as it was the first test to do this accurately, and it ensured that customers got the quality of milk they were paying for, and farmers were fairly compensated for the quality of the milk they could produce. If you have questions, I will do my best to answer them. My knowledge of this item, which I picked up at a local flea market, is limited to some research that I have done.
