This basket quilt is certainly made with late 1880s or so fabrics........various indigo and lighter blue prints, and solid red fabric. I believe this quilt was made in the very late 1800s or right around the early 1900s. These baskets are hand pieced with the blues, the reds, and the red and cream check fabric. The solid areas use the same red check fabric and all of that is hand pieced also.........I've pulled one of the seams apart so you can hopefully see the hand stitching. This is a light weight quilt measuring about 67 inches by 77 inches, and it is hand quilted with approximately 5 stitches per inch. There are 30 baskets and each basket measures about 10.5 inches by 9 inches. The baskets are all hand pieced as is the check fabric, all of which was then hand pieced together. The red handles were originally hand appliqued on and then also machine stitched......I don't know when this was done. There is some slight age yellowing, and two light age stains on the front which show on the back.......there is some slight shifting of the cotton batting along the center fold line. I saw three pea size brown spots but no tears, holes, or fabric pops.......the baskets are in wonderful shape. The backing is muslin with no damage noted, other than what I stated above. The two short sides have a separate binding which is both hand stitched to the front and the back. There were two different prints used for each of these two sides, some of the same vintage fabrics that were also used in the baskets. The two long sides are finished with the check fabric and the muslin backing was turned into itself and hand stitched to form the two sides. I've tried to show this in one of the photos. The bindings and the edges are in very good condition. This quilt has been laundered and is ready for immediate use and will come to you from a smoke free home. It's visually very appealing.....it would look great folded at the foot of a bed or draped over a chair. Shipping will be by USPS and payment is to be received within 5 days from end of auction. I will happily combine shipping costs for multiple purchases. There is never a handling fee, and I will also refund any excess shipping costs.
