A breathtaking comport on standard in early pressed flint glass of immense proportions from the Boston and Sandwich Glass Factory of Cape Cod.Of rare and unusual design in Petal and Loop pattern,with a flaring overturned and scalloped rim and elongated knopped standard.Extremely thick and heavy leaded glass of brilliant refractive quality and deep resonant tone.The petals along the scalloped edge are nearly 1 inch in thickness!The bowl flares to an immense 11 1/2 inches across and is deeply incised with pressed petal panels.Has a rare addition of a chain of 11 raised circular buttons on the underside.The petal bases along the outside extend below the bowl and create an interesting scalloped edge.Typical petal and loop patterned base used for candlesticks and lamps of the period,but unusually large at 6 1/4 inches across!Also unusual is the elongated 6-sided baluster stem with knop annealed by wafer to the bowl,which generally was reserved for whale oil lamps of this early colonial period.The resulting specimen is truly one of the most stunning comports imaginable,and a very desirable piece of American flint glass from New England`s early period of production.The quality of the leaded glass is true to the Boston and Sandwich tradition,with a greyish cast and superb refractive brilliance.The piece resonates like a fire gong when struck read more
