Early Case Threshing Machine Co. Paper Lithograph Sign
Sold For:
or Sign In to see what it's worth.
An early framed paper litho sign featuring J.I. Case Threshing Machine Co., Racine, Wisconson advertising. It has an early threshing scene featuring a Case steam tractor and threshing machine. The Case logo is along the bottom edge and there is an small printed ad in the upper right margin that says "Sold by A.J. Codding, Valley City, Dak. Dak. is short for Dakota Territory which was separated into North and South Dakota in 1889. At first I didn't believe this to be a true Dakota Territory piece but after doing some research, I learned that Case began making steam "traction" engines in 1876. So this appears to be an 1889 or earlier sign as indicated by the Dakota Territory advertising. This is a paper lithograph sign. In the lower right corner it is marked "Orcutt Co. Litho, Chicago". The visible portion of the sign is 27.5" x 9.5". It appears that the sides of the sign may have been trimmed. There is a margin on the top and bottom of the sign. There are a number of condition issues but it still displays nicely. First there is some foxing or staining along the upper margin. The area just above the hills/mountains appear to be clouds that are part of the image and are not foxing. The foxing is above the clouds and extends across the top margin. There is a tear that extends in about 6.5" from the right edge with a small area of the print missing (see 8th picture). There is also a small tear near the upper left corner but does not extend into the printed area (only in the margin). There are at least 2 small "chips" on the upper margin where a small piece of paper is torn away from the edge. There is also a small area of paper loss near the far left edge. Apparently this piece was rolled up at one time as there are roll creases extending across the face (more noticeable on the left side). In spite of these flaws, it still displays very good. The color of the litho is quite good considering that this piece is at least 122 years old. The frame size is 30.5" x 12.75" and has fancy gesso trim on the edges. The gesso trim has broken away from both side pieces and 3 of the 4 corners. Still it looks quite good in this frame. Someone has nailed a piece of cardboard over the back and that appears to be the only backing on the piece. A neat early J.I. Case paper advertising sign from Dakota Territory. Thanks for looking and check out my other auctions for more unique items. Shipping can always be combined. For anyone in the Valley City area, I will be going to Valley City on Thursday, March 3 and could deliver the sign that day if you didn't want to pay the shipping.
