Item Title and description: Covered sugar bowl weighing 12 1/2 ounces and is 5 1/2 inch tall to top of urn finial. It is 7 1/2 inches handle to handle with the bowl itself being 5 inches wide with a depth of 3 3/4 inches. The lid is notched at either side to accept the handles and this is original construction. The lid is high domed with engraving on the outer perimeter and has an urn shaped finial which is attached to the lid by a threaded shaft and a silver nut. The top of the bowl has an applied milled band as seen in photos. The handles are shown in photos and have the original attachments to the bowl. Directly below the top edge milled band is an engraved border very nicely done. On either side of the bowl is an engraved area for a mongram but t is a mongram on one side only and that is JSL. At the base of the bowl is another row of engraving. Joseph Lorings' mark is found on the base as J Loring in script within a shaped cartouche. Period: 1800 Silversmith: Joseph Loring of Boston Massachusetts Date of Birth: Hull Massachusetts in 1743 Apprenticeship: 1756 Working Years: 1763 - 1815 which is the date of his death He was the child of Caleb and Rebecca Loring and he was married in 1766 to Mary Atkins As a young man he served this new country as a member of an Artillary Company during the Revolutionary War. After the war against England was won he returned to his life as a successful silversmith. This is an extremely nice example of workmanship and the art of engraving. As such it will be a welcome addition to your growing collection of Early American Silver I have placed a reasonable reserve on it and have made this a three day auction - I really want to keep it all to myself but t comes a time to move on. Payment can be made by either Check or money order. Buyer pays Insurance and I will pay Shipping. I leave feedback upon receipt of payment. If any questions please ask. Thak you for looking. Darwin
