Offered for auction is a very rare double steel engraving of President James Buchanan and Vice-President John C. Breckinridge. This engraving is by the renown John Chester Buttre and made from a daguerreotype by notable U.S. daguerreotypist Mathew Brady. Buchanan was President from 1857 to 1861. This is an original period item and in an early frame as pictures show. The entire framed engraving measures 9 3/4" by 7 7/8". It is in good condition for age, no creases or tears. The backing is tacked on tightly and is a little fragile as last picture will show. The tack that held one side of the hanging wire is gone, so the wire is loose at one end. Both engravings bear the wording: Daguerreotype by Brady and Engraved by J. C. Buttre. Underneath both portraits are their names and titles. Historians have said that not very many pictures were taken of Buchanan, that picture-taking of the Presidents became much more common after 1861, so this would make this particular engraving even more attractive to any history buff.
