This is a ca. 1820 Gold Front Banjo Clock. The gilded mahogany rope front case is 33 tall and 10 1/4 wide. There is some loss to the gilding but it is all original. The back of the case is one piece and appears to be pine. The 7 painted iron dial is in great original condition. The dial is located by 2 pins and anchored by 2 dags The barbed hands are beautifully made and in mint condition. The gold leaf and reverse painted glasses are completely original with no touch up and are simply spectacular! The door is a beautiful seaside landscape with finely detailed sailboats, buildings, foliage, sea and cloudy sky. The throat glass has a gold leaf border with a vase with flowering vine also in gold leaf. There are 2 small diagonal lines of loss on the door glass but they do not detract in any way. The sidearms are cast brass. The bezel is cast brass with a turned decorative ring. The dial glass has been replaced with convex glass. The cast brass finial is not original to the clock. The movement is original to the case. The ghost on the back board of the case matches the movement exactly. There is a knot in the backboard behind the movement that has slightly stained the backplate of the movement. They match perfectly. The movement has been serviced and is in good running order. This is a very fine example of an early American Gold Front banjo clock with truly wonderful original glasses.
