Halcyon Days Enamels Limited Edition-Cartier-1970’sWorld Wildlife FoundationEndangered Species Series6 BoxesMint-Boxed-Certificate See My eBay Store-"English Enamels" Category for lots of other Halcyon Days, Crummles and other Enamel Boxes @great Prices.Over 100 from the 70/80's See My eBay Store-"English Enamels" Outstanding and very early Limited Edition set of 6 large enamel boxes produced by Bilston & Battersea (Halcyon Days) for Cartier, New York early in 1970’s for the benefit of WWF (World Wildlife Foundation), which at this time was headed up by Prince Phillip. This was produced as a limited edition of 350 sets, and each set came in an elaborate wooden box covered in what appears to be a silk fabric, marked on the outside of the oval presentation box in gold lettering it reads, Bilston & Battersea Enamels World Wildlife Collection. This set is #79 which is incorporated into the base mark of each box. The six boxes each have their own inset in the box, and for this reason the boxes have stayed in excellent condition, I purchased this directly from Bilston & Battersea (Halcyon Days) and the set has remained in the box and never been put out on dislplay. The set consists of 6 Large enamel boxes on copper and each has a lot of decoration and information upon it. 2 of the boxes are round, 2 are oval with the design horizontally displayed and the other two are also oval but with the design vertically displayed. Here are the dimensions: round boxes are 2 ½" in diameter and 1 ½" tall and the oval boxes are 3" x 2" and just over 1" in height. The rims (there is also one at the base of the box) and hinges are made of an antiqued metal (I would imagine brass), unlike the shiny newer rims Halcyon Days went on to produce. Each base is marked with the early Bilston & Battersea backstamp as well as Cartier, New York and also "World Wildlife Collection USA edition 89/350". Each box pictures and tells about an Endangered Wild Animal, each box has a lid decorated with the animal in its natural habitat, then the sides are decorated all around with smaller designs again of the species in its habitat and the front of each box has the name and description of the animal, the inside of the boxes are finished in white enamel, the inside base of each one has the Panda Bear which is the insignia of the WWF and on the inside lid is a quote from a famous person. Here is a description of each box: 1. BALD EAGLE, description reading on outside "Bald Eagle… America’s national bird, the bald eagle, suffers from the side effects of pesticides and a lack of suitable breeding sites" inside lid reads "No country in the world, rich or poor, is free from the threat of environmental contamination" …Neil Armstrong. This box is an Oval vertical design.2. GALAPAGOS PENGUIN…"The Galapagos Penguin is one of the rarest species found in the Galapagos Islands and is the most northerly of all penguins." And inside reads "the extermination of a species of animal is like the destruction of a unique work of art…H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh K.G K.T.". This is the other Oval with vertical design.3. POLAR BEAR "Polar bear numbers have declined drastically since the 17th century due largely to intense hunting by man". Inside lid "We have a moral obligation toward our descendants. We must not pass on to them a legacy of empty oceans and dead reefs…Jacques-Yves Cousteau". This box is oval with horizontal design.4. HAWAIIAN GOOSE "The Hawaiian goose has been bred in captivity, especially in Slimbridge, England, thus removing the immediate threat of extinction", inside reads "Our 20th Century civilisation does not adequately value the natural environment as a factor in the quality of human life… Sir Peter Scott C.B.E., D.S.C.". This box is oval with horizontal design.5. SNOW LEOPARD "Restricted to the high mountains of Central Asia, the snow leopard is now reduced to a total of perhaps 500 animals" inside lid reads "One cannot be truly human and civilized unless one looks on all creatures ... read more
