Here for your consideration is an early piece of Hampshire pottery - probably in the 1880's-90's time frame. The early Hampshire Pottery mark is seen in a coral colored stamp on the bottom. The pitcher has a flora and fauna motif with hand decorated birds on one side of the body and gold applied butterflies to the opposite side. The sitting bird is clasping a branch that is applied in gold - done probably at the same time the butterflies were done on the opposite side. Both the butterflies and the branches has some relief to them. The ground glazes upon which these decorations were applied is a creamy white and pink combination that has a semi-matte finish. Within this finish glaze there are gold flecks randomly scattered but they tend to be more concentrated near the decorations. The flat gold trim around the rim edge, base edge and handle is somewhat worn with age - but more so on the handle as would be expected. The butterflies are perfect! Other than the expected age crazing seen all over on this piece, the pitcher is really in great condition showing no chips, cracks, hairlines or known restoration. Inside is very clean. The pitcher is almost 7" tall at its highest point on the handle - 6" to the lip rim edge. Diameter of the scalloped rim edge averages about 4 1/2".
