Early Japanese Sword, Scabbard, Signed, WW 2 This auction is for an early Japanese sword and scabbard. I know nothing about military swords, so I'll do my best to describe the features that seem the most important. I'll also be glad to try and answer questions, and I can always email photos of any part(s) upon request. I was told by someone far more knowledgeable about military weapons than I am that this sword was hand-wrought, perhaps in the 1930s, and was probably used in WW 2. The handle is covered with sting ray skin and then wrapped with some sort of string. The maker marks are on the part of the metal shaft that is covered when the handle is in place. The sword comes with a scabbard that looks black to me.The blade is 39.5" long from guard to blade tip. The scabbard shows its age in some dings and dents, and both sword and scabbard need cleaning, which I'll leave to the next owner. The blade just has a few pinpoint nicks which I tried to show in one of the photos. The handle looks like it's missing a row or 2 of wrapping and is secured in part with a bamboo peg. It looks like someone attempted to paint silver the part w the peg is inserted. One side of the handle end has a pearl-like stone (please email for photo), and both sides have medallions incorporated in the wrapping. The scabbard is a tight fit, but cleaning the blade might make inserting and removing the sword easier. This sword and scabbard seem an excellent addition to any collection. Thanks for looking. Key words: WW 2, WW II, Japanese sword, scabbard, Samurai, 1930s
