Offered for Auction: Early John Taylor Arms (American 1887-1953) Etching titled Somewhere in France signed in pencil (John Taylor Arms-1919) by the artist and initialed (JTA) in the plate dated 1919. John Taylor Arms was a prolific etcher renowned for his architectural renderings, a group of which were recently exhibited at the National Gallery of Art. This etching was one of his first and is in its original frame. The painterly style which the artist adopted served him well, some of his later works are technical marvels but here the artistic side is in evidence. The paper appears to be heavy, perhaps laid, however I am not an expert. There is a torn paper label on the reverse backer board from the original dealer/framer in Brooklyn, NY. Somewhere in France is in the Smithsonian's collection. The narrow 1/2" frame appears to be mahogany. I have not cleaned or re-framed the piece. Condition: Fair given its age. As shown the etching has darkened over the years and has mat burn at the edges. I have not removed it from its frame so I cannot comment on the condition beneath the mat. The frame's backing paper has been torn as shown. The plate measures 12 1/4" x 6" and overall the framed piece measures 18 3/4" x 12 1/2". A nice addition to anyone's John Taylor Arms collection.
