Fantastic folk art quilt, fresh out of a Charlotte, North Carolina estate. This quilt comes from the county of Mecklenburg. I am not what you call a quilt expert, but I would consider this quilt as being an important piece of southern folk art. Dated in tiny cross stitch "1812" and also signed either "MMT" or "WWT". Very Important date in Americas history as in "The War Of 1812" when America declared war on Britain. The size is about 7' 3" tall and about 7' wide. This quilt is worn but not tattered. The application of the urn in the center is gone and only the outline and shape remains. Some of the cotton chintz applications are worn and some missing near the outside band of the quilt and in other spots. Almost 200 years old and the corners are near perfect. The quilt was made very thin and over the years has thinned even more. I would say is measures about a little less than 1/4" thick. Some staining and darkness to certain places on the quilt is evident and is a result of age and use. I have put a tape measure on a row of stitches to count. I count 8 psi but would like you to confirm. I would really enjoy and appreciate some feedback from the collectors on the quilt if you have time. Check out the little berry clusters that were balled up and sewn on the end of the vines. Very hard to find early folk art like this.
