Offered here is a rare Type III GAR medal. This is sometimes referred to as the '69, since the 1869 patent date is clearly marked on the reverse of the medal. This type was the source of considerable controversy because it so closely resembled the Medal Of Honor. The angle of the star's points is the same as the MOH, the trefoils are the same and the eagle with upswept wings suspender brooch is the same as the suspender on the MOH. In fact, when the Type III was being designed, the GAR committee approached the US Mint and requested permission to borrow the dies for the MOH eagle suspender. Amazingly, permission was granted and the subsequent Tyoe III eagle suspenders were struck using the same dies as the MOH suspender! Medal Of Honor winners were rightfully outraged by the substantial similarity in the medals, and the GAR was compelled to quickly implement considerable design changes. Consequently, a complete '69 is rarely encountered in today's market. This numbered example is superb. All details are fine and sharp. Patent date is clear. Brooch pin near perfect. On original flag drape. A choice example that would be almost impossible to upgrade.
